Real are off the pace when it comes to defending their Spanish title this season, although they are through to the last sixteen of the much-coveted Champions League and it will be interesting to see if the club revise their stance should Mourinho take them all the way.
Even so, it currently looks as though the former Chelsea manager will part company with the champions of Spain in a few months’ time, with the board unhappy with the club’s poor start to the season.
Marca says: “José Mourinho will not coach Real Madrid next season. Both Mou and Florentino Pérez believe the Portuguese’s cycle on the bench at the Bernabéu is exhausted and that the current situation cannot continue beyond 30 June.”
When asked about the report at Real’s press conference today, Mourinho was not prepared to speak about the situation.
“I am not going to speak about this. Speak to your colleague about it, the one who has written the story,” Mourinho said. “Organise a meal with that person. I’m not saying a single word.”
It raises the strong possibility that Mourinho will return to England in time for next season, although there could be several potential suitors including the two Manchester clubs and former side Chelsea who currently have interim manager Rafael Benitez in charge.
