Schürrle has been a long-term target for Chelsea and the west London club have spent £18.7m to secure the signature of the German international, with the midfielder arriving from Bayer Leverkusen.
A statement on the club website read: “Chelsea Football Club and Bayer 04 Leverkusen have reached an agreement for the transfer of Andre Schurrle, subject to the completion of legal documentation and related matters, including personal terms and passing a medical.”
It is possible that Kevin de Bruyne will go the other way as part of the deal, with the Belgian international having enjoyed a loan spell at Werder Bremen last season. However, perhaps Mourinho regards the midfielder as someone who can play a part at Stamford Bridge.
It does appear that Chelsea will miss out on the signature of Edinson Cavani, with Radamel Falcao having also slipped through the net, although Schürrle’s arrival is sure to be the first of many new faces at the club as Mourinho looks to build a squad that can challenge on lots of fronts next term.
