We’re off to Brazil!
Here at Football Scores, we love a good underdog story, so we’re tipping our hat to the good folks at American Samoa, the worst football team in the world, who have won their first ever match.
November 24th, 2011
The tiny Pacific Island nation has not been represented with much glory in international football prior to now. Ranked 204th in the world, alongside San Marino, Montserrat and Andorra, American Samoa were once on the receiving end of the heaviest defeat in international football history – a 31-0 hammering at the hands of Australia in 2001.
But yesterday, American Samoa ended a run of 30 straight defeats to record a 2-1 victory over Tonga in the first round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup OFC qualifying tournament.
Ramin Ott and Shalom Luani scored the historic goals, the third and fourth goals ever scored by American Samoa in World Cup qualification history.
Coach Thomas Rongen said the victory would now be “part of soccer history”.
“Maybe we have a chance to do something special here beyond this one game, but let’s enjoy this one right now,” he said.
We look forward to American Samoa holding England to a 0-0 draw in Brazil in the summer of 2014.
