FIFA investigating 10-0 win for Bahrain
FIFA’s big-wigs have got some work to do this week after they vowed to “investigate” Bahrain’s 10-0 victory over Indonesia in a World Cup qualifying match.
March 2nd, 2012
Bahrain, managed by former England manager Peter Taylor, needed a nine goal swing to have a chance of qualifying from the group, were aided slightly by the Indonesian keeper being sent-off after just two minutes. The Bahrain side did miss two penalties though, on top of the ten goals that they managed to score.
Unsurprisingly, the result has raised suspicions at FIFA who, once the latest order of brown envelops has arrived, will conduct a “routine” investigation, “given the unusual outcome against results expectation and head-to-head history”. We don’t know what this investigation will involve, but we’d be surprised if it was anything more complex than a quick call to an online betting exchange.
Unfortunately for Bahrain, the result wasn’t enough as Qatar scored an 83rd-minute equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw in Iran and advance to the next stage of the Asian qualifying tournament at their expense.
