Les Bleus off to a winning start as Honduras pay the penaltyA new-look France team claimed an easy victory on Sunday night, with Didier Deschamps’ team way too strong for a Honduras side who repeatedly fouled their opponents and were lucky to only receive the one red card.
It was Stoke City midfielder Wilson Palacios who received his marching orders for two first-half yellow cards, with Paul Pogba on the receiving end of both challenges.
Pogba was perhaps lucky to escape a sending off of his own when lashing out at Palacios, although it was the latter who saw red for a penalty area foul which led to Karim Benzema scoring from the spot.
The opener effectively ended the match as a contest, with France controlling the midfield thanks to strong performances from Pogba, Blaise Matuidi and Yohan Cabaye.
Benzema was a problem for the Honduras defence throughout the game and he helped his side to a second when the ball bounced off the post before Noel Valladares helped the ball across the line.
Goal line technology saw the goal awarded and Benzema helped himself to a second in the 72nd minute as Honduras gave up the ghost after being given the run around for most of the match.
It was something of a surprise to see only three Honduras players receive a card, with Evra, Pogba and Cabaye also getting a booking which might end up proving costly in the latter stages.
France will now face Switzerland on Friday for what could be a Group E decider, with the latter having beaten Ecuador earlier in the day.
