Fabian Delph was earlier this week held up as a pariah of all that was good about a Premier League player.

Rather than potentially sit on the bench for Manchester City, it had appeared that the England midfielder would instead remain at Aston Villa to captain the Midlands team during the 2015/16 season.

However, after making a statement to reassure Villa fans that he would be staying put, it appears that Manchester City have come calling again for his signature and Delph is once again open to moving to the Etihad Stadium.

It’s a move which will stun Villa supporters and there will be an angry reaction considering that Christian Benteke is also set to leave Villa Park this summer after Liverpool allegedly met the striker’s get-out clause.

Both transfers would leave Villa with plenty of money for new players although finding replacements for Delph and Benteke will be very difficult considering they are classed as the two star players at the club.

Speaking on 11 July, Delph told Villa’s website: “I’m aware there has been intense media speculation surrounding my future in the last 24 hours and I want to set the record straight. I’m not leaving. I’m staying at the football club and I can’t wait for the start of the season and captaining this great football club.”

However, the midfielder has now undertaken a medical with the Citizens and is likely to be unveiled as the club’s latest signing next week.

It follows in the footsteps of Raheem Sterling arriving at Manchester City and perhaps the lure of playing Champions League football and challenging for top honours was too much for Delph in the end.

Villa supporters will now be left wondering where their club goes from here. Tim Sherwood did an admirable job when replacing Paul Lambert last season although the manager might feel he has an impossible job to improve the club’s league position with these latest departures.
