Life hasn’t been kind for Everton in the Premier League this season, however tonight’s home clash with Dynamo Kiev can at least provide a welcome diversion from the drudgery of their league campaign.

Much was expected from the Toffees following their excellent finish to last season’s campaign when they finished an extremely creditable fifth in the top flight. That relative success has been far from emulated this season and Roberto Martinez’ side sit a mere six points above the relegation zone following some extremely disappointing results. Changed days indeed.

The Merseyside club have been enjoying their European adventure however and a successful campaign has included a double over a Wolfsburg side which is sitting second in the Bundesliga and is favourite to win this competition.

We can’t really see this fine form coming to a halt at Goodison this evening and Martinez will be confident that his men can take an advantage from this clash into the second leg in Ukraine, Betfred offering 11/8 for an Everton win and 8/11 up for grabs at Paddy Power for the side to qualify for the last eight.

Goodison was something of a fortress in last season’s Premier League and although it doesn’t appear to be the same daunting place for visiting top-flight teams this term, it certainly seems to be a hard place for European teams to visit.

This isn’t expected to be the most attractive match to watch, but with three of Kiev’s key players missing, we would expect the Toffees to grab themselves a tasty advantage in this first leg. As such, we’ll be looking carefully at home goalscorers and Romelu Lukaku is the obvious choice, the Belgian managing six goals in three European outings. At odds of 19/10 with 888sport, he certainly represents superb value to score any time against a Kiev side which isn’t the strongest at the back.
