The 32-year old, who also missed out on last season’s Champions League finale, was hurt during Saturday’s win over Aston Villa; forward Eden Hazard also went off injured and has been ruled out of Chelsea’s second consecutive European final.
The Blues are aiming for third in the league in order to qualify for the group stages of next season’s top-tier European tournament, but an unlikely mathematical scenario has emerged which could see them forced to play off at a neutral venue against Arsenal to decide who has to settle for entry in the third qualifying round instead.
It does, however, depend not only on a draw in Chelsea’s final league game against Everton, but also on Arsenal’s winning by a goal at St James Park, provided the Toon also scores.
Tonight’s opponents Benfica come into the game on the back of their first loss all season which could yet cost them the league title; winners FC Porto are also undefeated and have now gone top. Benfica will be aiming to put that behind them tonight at the Amsterdam Arena.
The spotlight also falls on coach Rafael Benitez tonight, who is keen to make his controversial reign an even more memorable one by winning Chelsea’s only silverware of the season.
