Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal has acknowledged that United’s Europa League last-sixteen clash with Liverpool on Thursday evening is very much a ‘must win’.

Manchester United face their bitter rivals for the very first time in European competition when they go head-to-head at Anfield and Jurgen Klopp’s men will make the return journey to Old Trafford the following week.

Both sides are failing to set the Premier League alight at the moment, therefore success in Europe’s second-tier competition may provide them with the only route into the Champions League next season.

When asked about the forthcoming match against Liverpool, Louis van Gaal said to reporters: “You have to win, in both cases I think.

“It is no different, although Liverpool against Manchester United is always a big game, traditionally I think, historical, and now, especially as both teams fight for a Champions League position so it’s a big game for both sides I think.

“When I beat teams like Liverpool then the appreciation is higher. I hope we shall beat them for the fifth time and the sixth time but more for the fans than myself.”

Manchester United sit sixth in the Premier League table following their 1-0 defeat at West Brom last weekend, while Liverpool sit three points behind the Red Devils in seventh position.
