Spain 4 Republic of Ireland 0 – Torres at the double as Irish exit 2012
The Republic of Ireland became the first team to go out of the European Championship after a mauling at the hands of champions Spain. The result was never in doubt after Fernando Torres fired past Shay Given in the third minute, with Giovanni Trapattoni’s team run ragged come the final whistle.

Torres looked sharp as a tack in this match and he was on hand to score his second of the night after the interval after latching on to David Silva’s through ball before an expert finish. Before this, Silva himself had slid the ball into the net despite being surrounded by Irish players.
The Republic were unable to make any sort of headway and Iker Casillas simply had a couple of routine saves to make during the ninety minutes, with Vicente del Bosque’s team able to go through the motions and add a fourth towards the end when substitute Cesc Fabregas fired home.
Spain once again look like a difficult team to beat and simply need a draw with Croatia to go through as Group C winners unless Italy manage to score five against the Irish. However, Trapattoni’s men will look to rev themselves up for their final game of the tournament.
