It appeared that Joachim Low was about to haul off Gomez and replace him with Miroslav Klose before Gomez struck after Mesut Ozil’s superbly crafted ball from the right-hand side found his team-mate in some rare space.

Up to that stage, it had been a largely dire affair with Portugal clearly content to play for a point despite having star talents like Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani on the pitch.

Indeed, the best Portuguese chance fell to central defender Pepe just before half-time when the ball broke to the Real Madrid player from a corner and his shot hit the crossbar and bounced down on the line before being cleared.

Substitute Silvestre Varela was also close to equalising at the death when the Porto forward was found in space and it took an excellent stop from Manuel Neuer to ensure that Germany go into their next game against the Netherlands with three points under their belts.

Meanwhile, Portugal play the Danes next knowing that defeat in that match will mean Euro 2012 will end prematurely for a team boasting several top-class international players but a negative attitude which meant they deserve to lose this game.
