England 1 Ukraine 0 – Wayne Rooney header helps Three Lions top group
England are through to the quarter finals of Euro 2012 and will face Italy on Sunday after a 1-0 win over Ukraine. Roy Hodgson’s team were fortunate not to concede an equaliser after Marko Dević’s shot appeared to cross the line, with John Terry racing back to scramble the ball clear.

Ukraine started the match better despite missing Andriy Shevchenko in attack, with Andriy Yarmolenko looking especially dangerous, although he miscontrolled the ball when practically through on goal.
The Three Lions created few chances of note in the first half, although Wayne Rooney mistimed a header from an Ashley Young cross and the Manchester United forward was to make amends in the second half.
England came out brightly at the interval and a Steven Gerrard cross took two deflections which wrong-footed the Ukraine keeper and allowed Rooney the simplest of headers to ensure that the visitors were in the lead.
Then came Dević through on goal and Hart half-saved his shot which meant the ball sailed in slow motion over the line before Terry’s clearance.
Ukraine threw on Shevchenko as a late substitute although the former Chelsea forward could make no impression and the trio of England substitutes did well with the ball, especially Andy Carroll.
