While neither team could find the back of the net during 120 minutes of football, Italy were completely dominant, with Andrea Pirlo controlling the midfield area although Cesare Prandelli’s team didn’t create too many clear-cut chances.
Mario Balotelli was close to poking the ball home on a couple of occasions, while Daniele De Rossi could have broken the deadlock inside the first few minutes, while Wayne Rooney also went close at the beginning of the match and hit an overhead kick over the crossbar in the second half.
John Terry was England’s best performer and the Three Lions defence was organised and committed throughout this match, although there was no denying that Roy Hodgson’s team were second best.
Even so, after Mario Balotelli and Steven Gerrard scored opening penalties for their respective teams, Montolivo shooting wide meant that England were in the ascendancy although Ashley Young hit the crossbar before Ashley Cole’s shot was saved by Gianluigi Buffon.
Italy will now go through to face Germany in the semi-finals, with Spain playing Portugal in the other last-four contest.
