Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling set to be included as Roy Hodgson selects five Liverpool players for the opener in Manaus
May 29th, 2014
It’s just 16 days until England line up against Italy for their Group D opener at the 2014 World Cup, with Roy Hodgson set to pick five players from the same club after Liverpool’s highly impressive season under Brendan Rodgers.
Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson were already nailed-on picks, although Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling are set to be included in the starting XI as Hodgson continues his policy of selecting young and energetic players who can cause some damage to the Azzurri.
England team to face Italy
GK: Joe Hart
RB: Glen Johnson
CB: Phil Jagielka
CB: Gary Cahill
LB: Leighton Baines
M: Jordan Henderson
M: Steven Gerrard
AM: Raheem Sterling
AM: Wayne Rooney
AM: James Milner
F: Daniel Sturridge
Hodgson is set to pick James Milner as part of a midfield diamond thanks to the Manchester City player’s defensive capabilities, with the industrious Jordan Henderson able to operate box-to-box in the sweltering heat of Manaus.
Jack Wilshere is set to miss out to Henderson, while Adam Lallana will have to be content with a place on the bench, while Danny Welbeck’s mediocre season in a Manchester United shirt means he also misses out.
Wilshere and Lallana should provide some good options from the bench, while Rickie Lambert can also contribute if England have their noses in front late in the game.
Paul Scholes has echoed the above team selection, claiming that Liverpool’s exciting style must be replicated on a world stage.
