England 5 San Marino 0 – Three Lions struggle to break down minnows
It was job done as far as England were concerned on Friday night, with Roy Hodgson’s men securing a 5-0 win against San Marino that saw Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck both score braces.

As expected, San Marino offered little in the way of attacking intent although they were defensively organised and it wasn’t until the 35th minute that the deadlock was broken when Rooney scored from the penalty spot after Welbeck had been fouled by the keeper in the penalty area.
It was the latter’s turn to score moments later after Aaron Lennon squared the ball across goal and Welbeck was able to flick the ball into the net, with the Spurs winger having replaced Theo Walcott who was unable to continue after a nasty clash with the San Marino keeper.
The visitors didn’t buckle after half-time and it wasn’t until the 70th minute that England extended their lead when captain Rooney scored his team’s third, with Welbeck adding his second goal moments later.
Alex Oxalde-Chamberlain added further gloss to the scoreline, although a 5-0 win was the least that this sell-out crowd were expecting and England will have more space to attack Poland on Tuesday night than they were allowed in this contest.
