Ian Holloway nearly kept Blackpool in the Premier League three seasons ago and watched his team deservedly beat the Black Cats, with Danny Gabbidon opening the scoring before Steven Fletcher levelled the match after the break.
However, John O’Shea was dismissed after conceding a penalty, with Gayle cool as a cucumber to put his team in front, while Stuart O’Keefe scored a spectacular goal to confirm the victory for Palace.
Manchester City won Saturday’s other televised game, with Alvaro Negredo coming off the bench to score his second goal in as many matches, while Yaya Toure wrapped things up against a Hull side that had chances to score in the first half.
Cardiff and Everton played out a stalemate in Wales, although a late Hatem Ben Arfa winner ensured that Newcastle beat Fulham, while it was the same outcome at Carrow Road as Norwich ran out 1-0 winners against Southampton.
Stoke City left it late to claim a 1-0 win at West Ham, with Jermaine Pennant’s free-kick sealing matters after the winger had just come on as a substitute.
