The prospect of an all-English final in this season’s Europa League became more likely on Friday morning when Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle were kept apart during the draw for the last eight of the competition.
Spurs came through a dramatic tie against Inter Milan and were rewarded with a kind draw against FC Basel, with Andre Villas-Boas looking to win the competition with a second team after triumphing with Porto two seasons ago.
Meanwhile, Chelsea will face Rubin Kazan after beating Steaua Bucharest 3-2 on aggregate, with the Russian side likely to push the Blues close as Rafael Benitez looks to win a cup double at Stamford Bridge.
Newcastle United are also in the last eight after that injury-time goal from Papiss Cissé against Anzhi Makhachkala, with the Magpies now set to face Benfica over two legs.
Fenerbahce playing Lazio means there will be at least one non-English side in the semi-finals of the competition, with Chelsea the bookmaker favourite to claim victory in this competition.
