Jose Mourinho has targeted Costa as his first-choice striker at Stamford Bridge, with Fernando Torres expected to be moved on

Diego Costa has scored 39 goals in 87 appearances for Atletico Madrid and it appears that Chelsea are getting closer to securing the player’s signature, with Jose Mourinho keen to get a deal sewn up before the 2014 World Cup.
The 25-year-old has attracted rave reviews in helping Atletico to the top of the Primera Liga this season and Chelsea are prepared to spend £40million on a player who recently made his debut for Spain despite originally representing Brazil.
Chelsea representatives watched the striker scored the only goal of the game on Wednesday night as the Madrid side beat Granada to continue their march towards the title, with initial talks having already taken place between the two clubs and the player’s representatives.
It has been an outstanding season for Costa who has scored 23 goals in 28 La Liga games this term, while he has also managed to find the net seven times during five Champions League matches, something that supersedes the efforts of the Chelsea players currently on the books.
Indeed, Mourinho recently commented off the record that the squad was short of quality forwards, a damning indictment on Fernando Torres who could yet return to his former club as part of a swap deal, with Demba Ba also likely to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer.
The Brazilian-born striker could yet start for Spain at the 2014 World Cup, with this outstanding forward regarded as the final cog in the Chelsea machine, with the forward likely to operate as a lone forward in front of three attacking midfielders such as Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian.
