Manchester United completely out of the title race after defeat at Stamford Bridge

David Moyes suffered his seventh Premier League defeat as manager of Manchester United on Sunday, with Chelsea cruising to a 3-1 win against the champions which means that the latter are now fourteen points behind Arsenal.

Any notion that United will challenge for the title this term will have surely disappeared following this defeat, while a top four position is starting to look remote considering that Liverpool have a six-point cushion and a vastly superior goal difference.

Adnan Januzaj was once again the best player in a United shirt and the visitors were probably the better team in the first ten minutes, with Petr Cech being forced into making a smart save from Danny Welbeck.

However, once Samuel Eto’o broke the deadlock in the 17th minute, the result was rarely beyond doubt, with the Cameroon striker seeing his shot loop off Michael Carrick’s leg and past David de Gea for the opening goal of the game.

Some slack marking from United led to Eto’s and Chelsea’s second goal on the stroke of half-time, with the same player making it three shortly after break to put the result beyond doubt and suggest that the champions could suffer a heavy defeat.

Nevertheless, substitute Javier Hernandez reduced the arrears before United’s afternoon was to worsen in the dying minutes when Nemanja Vidic’s foul on Eden Hazard was adjudged to have been worthy of a red card.

Chelsea now sit two points behind leaders Arsenal, with the Premier League title race looking increasingly like a three-team one, with Manchester City sandwiched between these teams.
