Chelsea were the only English team in Pot 1 of the Champions League thanks to winning their particular group although the Blues have been handed a very tough last sixteen encounter.

Jose Mourinho’s side could well go close in this competition, although PSG represent a major stumbling block for the London side who reached the semi-final stage last season before losing to Atletico Madrid.

The Champions League last sixteen draw was always going to be a mixed bag where the English teams were concerned, although it is actually Arsenal that come up smelling of roses.

The Gunners would probably have hand-picked Monaco from the teams available in Pot 1, with the French side only just edging their particular group and a relatively modest outfit to face at this stage in the competition.

However, Manchester City have not been rewarded for their minor-miracle in making it through a tricky group including Bayern, Roma and CSKA Moscow.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side will face Barcelona again, a team who beat them in the last sixteen stage of the competition last term, with City hoping to have the edge over Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho claimed before the draw that he wouldn’t mind playing Paris Saint-Germain in the next round due to the short distance travel, although his bluff has been called after the teams were paired together.

The sides met in the quarter final last season as Chelsea went through on away goals thanks to a last-gasp goal, although it looks set to be another close tie.

Arsenal fans will have been delighted by the draw which brought them Monaco as opponents rather than a potential re-match against Bayern Munich.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid will be favourites to beat Bayer Leverkusen over two games, while Juventus will be up against Borussia Dortmund for what should be an evenly-matched contest.

FC Schalke are likely to have their work cut out when facing Real Madrid, with Bayern Munich the other favourite to win the competition and they will expect to progress against Shakhtar.

Basel v Porto looks to be the weakest match-up of the last sixteen stage, with the winner of that tie likely to be wanted by the other seven quarter-finalists.
