Chelsea stormed to the Premier League title in spectacular fashion last season, however manager Jose Mourinho’s future with the club is the subject of much speculation following a miserable start to the season with the Blues languishing in the bottom half of the table with just eight points from their first eight Premier League matches.
A 3-1 defeat to Southampton at Stamford Bridge before the international break led to further speculation about the current manager’s future, the Portuguese 52-year-old claiming that the only way he will leave is if the Chelsea hierarchy decide to sack him from his position.
“I want to make it clear,” Mourinho told reporters. “One, I don’t run away. Two, if the club want to sack me they have to sack me because I am not running away from my responsibilities or my team.
“Third – and I think this is even more important than the first and the second – it is a crucial moment in the history of this club. You know why? Because if they sack me they sack the best manager this club had.”
Despite Mourinho’s insistence that he is going nowhere, he is still one of the leading contenders to be the next managerial casualty in the top flight with Paddy Power going 9/2 and the Italian media claim that the west London side are eager to replace him with Italian coach Antonio Conte.
Conte steered Juventus to three league titles prior to taking the national team last year, however he is now in the last year of a two-year contract and despite an extension being apparently on the table, he is known to be keen to manage in the Premier League with La Gazette reporting that the Blues may well make him an offer he can’t refuse.
Paddy Power go 14/1 that Conte is next in charge at Stamford Bridge with bayern Munich boss Pep Giardiola favourite at 4/1.
