Arsenal supporters will be delighted that Ozil has signed for Arsenal, with the midfielder costing £42.5million and it was something of a surprise that Real Madrid agreed to let the German leave the Bernabeu.
The arrival of Gareth Bale meant that Ozil couldn’t be guaranteed first-team football for what is a World Cup season, with Arsene Wenger persuading the player that he can become a Premier League star at this stage of his career.
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis described Ozil as a “world-class player, who is one of Europe’s brightest young talents”. Gazidis also paid tribute to the support of the club’s majority shareholder Stan Kroenke who, he said, “wants to see Arsenal winning titles and trophies and has absolute faith and belief in our manager to achieve that”.
“We are extremely pleased to have signed Mesut Ozil,” Wenger said. “He is a great player, with proven quality at both club and international level. We have watched and admired him for some time as he has all the attributes I look for in an Arsenal player.”
Ozil is the third most expensive signing in British football history, with the 24-year-old agreeing a five-year deal which means he will earn £150,000 per week, having completed a medical in Germany on Monday.
