Wigan v Gillingham tips – Latics too short for Gills visit
Gillingham arrive at the DW Stadium in great form and can claim at least a point
January 7th, 2016
There’s a League One promotion clash this evening, with Wigan entertaining a Gillingham side bidding to win their fifth match on the bounce.
Justin Edinburgh’s team began the season with a 4-0 demolition of Sheffield United and have continued in the same vein for much of the campaign, recording fifteen wins from their twenty-five clashes.
While ten of these have come at the Priestfield, it’s still a surprise that the bookies are pricing up the Gills at such big odds for tonight’s Sky Sports-televised clash.
Gillingham have avoided defeat in eight of their twelve away matches, with recent triumphs at Millwall and Swindon illustrating that this is a team in the groove right now.
Bradley Dack is enjoying a real purple patch in front of goal and this is a side who are averaging nearly two goals per match this term.
Wigan are certainly no slouches although the pressure is on the Latics for this clash at a rainy DW Stadium. Gary Caldwell’s side have only won six of their eleven home matches which means they sit nine points behind their opponents.
Defensively, Wigan are pretty sound at home, with the team having enjoyed seven points from their last three matches, all on the road.
Previously to this, they were stung at home to Blackpool and one can’t help but feel that the same thing might happen again in this match.
This is Caldwell’s first management position and perhaps Wigan should have hired someone with a stronger track record considering they have one of the biggest budgets in the division.
A team boasting Jussi Jaaskelainen, Max Power, Will Grigg and Michael Jacobs should arguably be doing better, with Gillingham taken to get the job done.
