West Ham v Accrington Stanley tips: Back visitors to avoid defeat in east London tonight
A struggling Hammers side will have a battle on their hands tonight in the EFL Cup
September 21st, 2016
Cup competitions often throw up some intriguing ties and tonight’s offering is no exception with West Ham United up against League Two side Accrington Stanley in what could prove to be a close-run thing for the Premier Leaguers.
Stanley caused the shock of the previous round of the EFL Cup when they dumped Burnley out of the competition and the Lancashire side will be brimming with confidence when they come up against another struggling top-flight side tonight.
The Hammers haven’t enjoyed a successful season so far and with just three points from their opening five Premier League matches they won’t be in the highest of spirits heading into tonight’s clash. Indeed, with two successive 4-2 defeats to Watford and West Brom behind them, Hammers boss Slaven Bilic might be forgiven for attaching more importance to the forthcoming weekend clash with Southampton than tonight’s cup game.
Who could blame him, given that his side are currently sitting precariously in the bottom three in the Premier League. While it may be slightly premature to talk of relegation, the fact remains that the Hammers have as yet failed to show that they are capable of remaining in the top flight based on recent performances and now that the east Londoners are out of Europe for another season, Bilic’s main priority will certainly be Premier League survival.
Does that mean that we fancy Stanley to win tonight’s match? They are more than capable of causing an upset and they have been enjoying some excellent form in league One this season with seven points from their last three outings. Nevertheless, even an out-of-form Hammers side will pose formidable opponents tonight and whilst we are attracted by the 16/1 on offer for a Stanley win, we’ll be playing it slightly safer and backing Accrington/Draw on the Double Chance market after ninety minutes at 7/2 with Ladbrokes.
