Watford v Manchester City betting tips – Back Hornets to avoid defeat
City's underwhelming away form would suggest that Watford could take something from this clash
December 31st, 2015
Manchester City are sitting third in the Premier League table, some three points adrift of Leicester City and Arsenal as we head towards the New Year. Manuel Pellegrini’s side had plenty of chances to get themselves onto the scoresheet in Tuesday evening’s clash with Leicester City, however the Foxes keeper was in tremendous form with several great saves and with Sergio Aguero squandering a great chance, both sides had to content themselves with a point apiece in the goal-less draw.
Nevertheless, the City boss was less than impressed with his team’s performance, saying to reporters: “I’m not happy because we came here to try to win the game. From the first minute of the game we went for the three points. I think that we had more possession than Leicester, more attempts than Leicester, we did more things to win the game. But of course if you come to win it’s very important not to lose. I think tonight we were very solid and consistent against a difficult team – they have important players in a very good moment and they always score goals.”
City will be determined to improve on that performance and grab themselves a much-needed three points on January 2nd and PaddyPower make the visitors favourites at 8/11 to seal the win, although we don’t share their optimism.
The Citizens have failed to triumph in any of their last six games away from the Etihad Stadium, just three points being collected in that time. They will be facing a Hornets side which have been enjoying some excellent form of late, despite losing to Spurs earlier in the week. Watford have managed 13 points from their last six outings and it wouldn’t be a surprise should they take something from this head-to-head with a City side who are struggling with travel sickness. Bet365’s 5/4 on a Watford-Draw in the Double Chance market is extremely tempting, given that Quique Sanchez Flores’ side are brimming with confidence right now.
Also worthy of serious consideration is 888sports’ 6/5 for Under 2.5 goals in this encounter. City’s dismal form on there road is a direct result of their lack of goalscoring prowess away from the Etihad. They may have found the back of the net some 29 times in front of their home fans but they have scored just eight on the road with Sergio Aguero failing to score in nine of his last eleven Premier League games. Watford have been scoring for fun at Vicarage Road, whilst they have been particularly adept at keeping the ball out of the home goal, therefore we expect a low-scoring encounter on Saturday.
For those looking for an Anytime Goalscorer wager, we suggest backing Hornets forward Odion Ighalo at 21/10 with Ladbrokes. He has scored in all of his last six top flight games for Watford with a total of seven goals and we expect him to cause the City defence no end of problems, given that the visitors have managed just three clean sheets in their previous 14 Premier League games.
