Wales v Portugal tips – cagey game on the cards in Lyon
Wales will look to keep things tight against a Portugal side who haven’t been scoring many goals
July 5th, 2016
Belgium treated Wales lightly on Friday. After taking an early lead, the Belgians could have closed ranks a little more, although they continued an attacking approach and ultimately played into their opponents’ hands.
Portugal will be a little more reserved on Wednesday night. Fernando Santos is an experienced coach who has enjoyed previous success with Greece and he knows how to handle tournament knockout football.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the pin-up star of the team, although Pepe is arguably more important and will surely be fielded even if half-fit. Nani can still weave his magic from out wide and Renato Sanches has been a bustling ball of energy in the middle of the park.
Therefore, we know we’ll get a compact shape from Portugal and Wales might have to match them. Aaron Ramsey’s suspension means that there’s a spot up for grabs and perhaps it will be Andy King who takes his place in midfield.
Gareth Bale will be heavily-marked by the hard-working Portuguese defenders, with the two teams competing for a precious place in the Euro 2016 final so there will be no quarter given.
Ultimately, it’s a match where goals could be scarce and we shouldn’t expect Wales to find the net three times, or even two for that matter.
