Garry Monk’s side displayed their credentials as fearsome opponents in the Premier League by coming from behind twice to force reigning champions Chelsea to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

Now summer signing Andre Ayew certainly hit the ground running by scoring on his Swansea debut and both Ki Sung-Yueng and Jonjo Shelvey appear to have kept their excellent form from last season.

Bafetimbi Gomis was impressive and earned Swansea the penalty which resulted in the sending off of Thibaut Courtois, which he duly scored against Courtois’ replacement Asmir Begovic.

Indeed, the Swans appear to found their feet under Monk and his side certainly weren’t fazed against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, although they will be up against a Newcastle United side which came close to sealing the points against Southampton in their opening match.

Steve McClaren has assembled a decent side and the Magpies boss will have been pleased to have started his tenure at St James’ Park with a thoroughly solid performance against one of the Premier League’s best teams.

New signing Georginio Wijnaldum made an immediate impact for the hosts by scoring a debut goal, whilst fellow debutants Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba also played their part in what was an impressive display.

Indeed, the Magpies had one of the worst records in the top-flight last season away from home and McClaren will have highlighted this as an area in which improvement is desperately needed should the club wish to distance itself from the threat of relegation this term. Newcastle may have their work cut out against a Swansea side who will be in high spirits following their exploits last weekend but we expect them to edge a match which will contain quite a few goals.
