It was supposed to be the Louis van Gaal show last weekend, although Manchester United were upstaged by a Swansea side who look ready to build on last season’s twelfth place and move into the top half of the table.
While we can’t read too much into one result, Garry Monk has landed a coup bringing back Gylfi Sigurdsson, while Wilfried Bony looks set to remain at the Liberty Stadium and Federico Fernandez has just arrived to shore up the defence.
‘I can identify myself with the Swansea style. I like to play the ball from the back and, of course, I love to defend too,’ Fernandez said.
‘I was impressed last weekend with the team’s performance and result against Manchester United.
‘It was a very intelligent performance. The team really took its opportunities, and it was a fantastic start to the season. I just can’t wait to start training and playing games.’
Monk has said Fernandez could be straight into the team for the game against Burnley, with the manager full of praise for the players after they executed the perfect game plan at Old Trafford.
“The whole key to it all was us coming together as a group and working together,” he said.
“I made it clear to the players this week to go up here and show exactly what we’re about.
“We had a game plan to try and work to and to a man they were very, very good.
“We could have improved in a lot of areas [but] to come to Old Trafford in the first game of the season with everything going on… it was very good to get that level out of the boys already.
“There will be ups and downs but as long as I keep that focus on them and give what I feel is right for them then hopefully we’ll have more days like this.”
Swansea should have too much quality for a Burnley side who might take a few games to find their feet in the top flight, although Sean Dyche is not a miracle worker and his tiny budget for new players this summer means an uphill struggle is very likely.
