Tensions are always high in the Tyne & Wear derby and the severity of their current situations gives Sunday’s encounter an added element. Sunderland head into this match at the bottom of the Premier League table with no wins this season and just three points on the board. Newcastle have fared little better but improved their situation hugely with a 6-2 hammering of Norwich City last weekend.

For Sunderland, this fixture has been pivotal over the past two seasons with the Black Cats sacking their manager, beating Newcastle and avoiding relegation in successive campaigns. Now that Sam Allardyce is in the Sunderland hot-seat, Newcastle fans may fear that lightning will be striking for a third time although we don’t share any pessimism that they may have, given that the hosts are lacking a killer instinct and are pretty error-prone at the back.

That said, a win for the Black Cats could kick-start a timely revival although they will be up against a Newcastle side which will have been given newly-found belief following their first win of the season on Sunday against Norwich City, a victory that lifted them two points clear of the relegation zone.

Georginio Wijnaldum bagged himself four goals in last weekend’s rout and he will undoubtedly be called upon to bang in a few more at the Stadium of Light, thus giving the Magpies their first win in this fixture for over four years.

To be honest, picking between these sides is a difficult task, however given their eagerness to avoid defeat, we feel that a point apiece would be a reasonable result for both sides and it is the draw which is offering the best value at 12/5.

All but three of the last nine meetings between these sides have produced under 3 goals and we expect a cagey affair on Sunday which should result in more of the same.

Live coverage on Sky Sports 1 at 12pm, Sunday 25th October.
