Manchester United were pretty woeful last weekend. It wasn’t an unlucky defeat against Swansea and it’s hard to consider them anything approaching value

Louis van Gaal hasn’t signed anyone this week and continues to be short of defenders as the Dutchman considers whether to operate with three at the back after the formation flopped last weekend.

Robin van Persie might be about to enter the fray although the Dutchman is still working his way to full match fitness and Sunderland will be sniffing blood ahead of this game.

Sunderland got the better of the Red Devils in the Capital One Cup last term to reach the final and they were also a goal up in the match at the Stadium of Light before Adnan Januzaj came back with a spectacular brace.

The match odds don’t stack up. William Hill are the only firm brave enough to go 4/5 about a win for Manchester United but on what basis would you back this so-called team in transition?

Perhaps Juan Mata will get control of the ball and make things happen for the visitors, although it’s hard to ignore the 4/1 about Sunderland claiming victory in this match and there’s also a case for backing them as part of the Double Chance selection.

Bet365 offer 11/10 about the Black Cats and the Draw which seems generous considering they were value for at least a point at The Hawthorns, with the Black Cats looking to build on that performance and strike United while they are down.

The Sunderland midfield now boasts Jack Rodwell who should be well up for the challenge of shackling Mata, with Adam Johnson adding some cut and thrust behind the duo of Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham.

Gus Poyet knew how to beat United last season and the team aren’t a lot better this time around.
