Sunderland’s eleventh-hour escape from relegation last season has just delayed the inevitable, or at least that is how it appears at the moment. To say that the Black Cats have been pretty abysmal would be an understatement and with no disrespect to David Moyes’ men, we firmly believe that we will be seeing them swap places with local rivals Newcastle United at the end of the season with the Magpies replacing them in the top tier in 2017/18.

With a huge part of the season still remaining much can yet happen on both of these fronts, however Sunderland really do need to get their rears into gear, and quickly. A five-game winless run in the Premier League has left them joint-bottom of the table with a single point to their name and we don’t anticipate them getting anything from this weekend’s clash with a Crystal Palace side which have been enjoying some excellent form so far this season.

The Black Cats are in serious need of a positive display, however Crystal Palace head to the Stadium of Light on the back of a decent run which includes back-to-back Premier League wins over Stoke City and Middlesbrough. A 2-0 defeat to Southampton in the midweek EFL Cup will have dented confidence slightly although they will expect a relatively easy win on Saturday afternoon.

We share their optimism as do the bookies who make the Eagles favourites at 17/10 to seal the points, an excellent price given that the Black cats have been particularly woeful both at home and away with their single point actually being won at St Mary’s last month.

With seven points from their last three top-flight outings, the Eagles should have relatively little difficulty in adding to this at the weekend and piling even more pressure onto David Moyes’ shoulders as he seeks to steer his new side further from the bottom of the table.

And he thought things were tough in Spain.
