Stoke City v Liverpool betting tips – More woe for Klopp’s Reds
Both Stoke City and Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from defeats tonight
January 5th, 2016
Having both lost in the Premier League at the weekend, these sides will be feeling that they need to prove a point when they go head-to-head in their Capital One Cup semi-final first leg match this evening at the Britannia Stadium.
No doubt Mark Hughes will be looking back over his side’s last few games with very mixed feelings, given that Stoke have suffered defeat to West Brom and Crystal Palace recently, as well as having lifted themselves to return wins against the ‘bigger clubs’ such as Manchester United, Manchester City and Everton, the latter in a seven goal thriller.
They have more than impressed in this competition, having swept past Luton Town, Chelsea, Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday. As such, the Potters are moving ever closer to their first Capital One Cup final since their 1972 triumph.
Over on Merseyside, it would very much appear that the honeymoon period following the appointment of Jurgen Klupp is now well and truly over. The German’s tenure started with three draws, however wins away to Chelsea, Man City and Southampton suggested that his style of play was suiting his side very well, the latter win seeing the Saints routed to the tune of 6-1.
It couldn’t last and Klopp will now be fully aware of the massive task that confronts him. West Brom managed a draw at Anfield, however it will be his side’s performances away from home that will be causing him most concern.
Indeed, of Liverpool’s last four outings, they have lost three without scoring and their only triumph was against a hapless Sunderland side which had failed to win any of their previous four games.
Aside from their comprehensive victory against Southampton, Klopp’s men haven’t set the Capital One Cup alight. They struggled against League Two outfit Carlisle United, needing penalties to get past the Cumbrians and into the next round, whereupon they recorded a narrow win at home to Bournemouth. Liverpool are 6/4 with William Hill to beat the Potters this evening.
All in all, although the Reds will be confident of recording a win at the Britannia, they have been desperately poor away from Anfield. In contrast, Stoke have managed to lift themselves sufficiently against the bigger clubs to pull off some unlikely wins. Victory against a lacklustre Reds side tonight wouldn’t be unlikely in the slightest however and we’ll be backing a Stoke City win at 2/1 with Coral.
