Southend v Peterborough Tips – Posh will get second win of the season
Peterborough will prove too strong for winless Southend this weekend
September 2nd, 2015
The Shrimpers have suffered a poor start to the season with a mere three points from their opening five games and will be desperate to clinch a maximum points haul when Peterborough come to town on Saturday afternoon.
Southend managed their third draw of the season when they held Coventry City to a 2-2 draw at the Ricoh Arena earlier this week, Sam Ricketts scoring eighteen minutes from the end to rescue a point for the hosts.
Indeed, the Shrimpers’ last win in the league was in the League Two play-off finals last season, penalties being needed to seal the win over Wycombe Wanderers on that occasion, however life in League One is proving tough for the side and much improvement is needed.
Southend striker David Mooney scored his first goal of the season at the Ricoh Arena on Monday evening and he will be hopeful that this will be the first of many goals this term.
“There’s always a bit of doubt in your mind when you don’t get off the mark early on as a striker. It’s not been the best start I could have made but I’m off the mark now which is great,” he said to the official club website.
“All I can do as a striker is putting the ball in the back of the net. I missed a penalty before against Coventry. Fortunately it ended up in the back of the net and it’s great to get my first for the club.
“It was good working up front with Noel (Hunt). It’s still a lot of hard graft, and whether it’s one up front, two up front, three up front, you still have to slot in at times and work defensively on the opposition midfield players.
“It’s going to be a great game on Saturday against Peterborough. Hopefully there’ll be a big crowd in at Roots Hall – it should be a cracker. If we can score the first goal then we can hopefully go on and win the game.”
Peterborough have enjoyed a similarly slow start to the season, however they have at least secured a victory having recorded a 2-1 win over Colchester United. Since then they have drawn once and lost twice and go into this match on the back of a league draw against Gillingham, John Taylor rescuing a point in the final minute after the hosts going 1-0 down.
Indeed, Peterborough should prove too strong for a Southend side which had only found the back of the net on one occasion prior to Monday’s 2-2 draw with Coventry and a low scoring encounter should see the Posh seal the points with the single goal of the game.
