Southampton v Sunderland tips: Back saints to sweep past depleted Black cats
Things aren't looking too good for Sunderland in the Premier League. They won't look any better in the EFL Cup tonight

It is getting rather hard to feel much sympathy for David Moyes, the Scotsman finding things extremely tough at the Stadium of Light. The Sunderland boss may have no shortage of excuses for his side’s dreadful run of form which has seen them manage just two points from nine Premier League matches, however so far he has offered little in the way of solutions. The Black Cats are not playing like a team which are on the verge of an upturn in fortunes and whilst the EFL Cup may offer a welcome distraction from the league campaign, it will only serve to further illuminate the gulf in class between Sunderland and their Premier League opponents at St Mary’s tonight.
Southampton have been enjoying a decent enough season in the top flight and they appear to have coped pretty well with their hectic schedule which has seen them juggle Europa League football with domestic competition. As such, one could be forgiven for assuming that Saints boss Claude Puel would afford the EFL Cup less importance and therefore rest a few key players. Nevertheless at stake tonight is a place in the last eight of the competition and a realistic chance of silverware, therefore whilst there could be an argument for making a few changes, we expect to see a strong Saints team line-up against a Sunderland outfit which have been awful this season.
Sunderland boss Moyes hinted that he may rest a few players for this clash, however given that he doesn’t have too much at his disposal this could mean trouble for the visitors and will certainly hand the initiative to the home side. Indeed the Saints were comfortable winners against Crystal Palace at the weekend and wouldn’t be too troubled by the Moyes’ strongest possible side. A weakened Sunderland would be very easy prey.
