Southampton v Liverpool tips: Reds to dominate in semi-final first-leg
Liverpool couldn't find a way past League Two side Plymouth Argyle at the weekend. We don't envisage them having the same problem on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s aim is a domestic clean sweep and he isn’t doing a bad job of things so far. The weekend draw with Plymouth Argyle aside, the Reds have been on fire this season and Klopp will be desperate to go one better than last season when the side came agonisingly close to winning this competition, only to lose out to Manchester City in the final.
Liverpool rarely have problems finding the back of the net at St Mary’s and despite the two teams fighting out a 0-0 draw in their last meeting there, Klopp’s side have enjoyed three wins in their last five games on the south coast with thirteen goals in that time. The Reds enjoyed a huge 6-1 victory in this competition over a year ago and whilst we don’t believe that there will be such an emphatic win for Liverpool this time around, we do expect the away side to utterly dominate and grab for themselves a first-leg victory.
Liverpool are 7/5 with William Hill to win on Wednesday evening and we recommend backing them at this price. The Reds have dropped points on the road but they have won away at Arsenal and Chelsea, therefore they certainly won’t be fazed by their visit to St Mary’s this week. Indeed Southampton will be in less-than-high spirits having suffered defeat in their last three Premier League outings and whilst we do believe that the home side will manage to find a way through a less-than-solid Liverpool defence, this will purely be a consolation goal in a Liverpool victory.
Divock Origi looks to be the best bet on the goalscoring front, the Belgian struggling of late with a barren spell but certain to prove a thorn in the side for the Saints defence. Origi managed a hat-trick in his last trip to St Mary’s and we expect him to feature on the goal-tally in this midweek clash.
