Southampton v Everton tips – Saints to dominate at St Mary’s
A new-look Saints side will look to extend their fine home record against the Toffees on Saturday
August 14th, 2015
Southampton haven’t suffered defeat to Everton at home since 2002 and this fixture offers the hosts the chance to extend that excellent record and claim their first league win of the new season against an Everton side which appeared somewhat off-colour against Watford last weekend.
The Saints coasted through their Europa League qualifying match last week and they were in fine form at St James’ Park last weekend as they held the Magpies to a 2-2 draw. Everton also recorded a draw by the same scoreline in their opening league match, however they were thoroughly unimpressive against a newly-promoted Watford side and improvement will be needed should they wish to steal the spoils on the south coast this weekend.
The Merseysiders are struggling with a lengthy injury list which now includes Leighton Baines, Kevin Mirallas, Aiden McGeady and Steven Pienaar, however Saints boss Ronald Koeman has little worries in that department and will likely start an unchanged team from that who held Newcastle to a draw last weekend.
Southampton have won just two of their last eleven meetings between the sides at home, however these victories both occurred last year. Everton have failed to manage a clean sheet in the top flight since April and with Southampton scoring in each of their last six outings, we’ll be expecting the home side to score on Saturday.
This fixture doesn’t usually produce many goals, although on this occasion both sides will be in attack mode and we should be seeing goals at both ends. Graziano Pelle will be the man to watch as he aims to improve his form since it dipped after christmas. He certainly poses the biggest threat for the hosts and should have little difficulty in piercing what is an unstable Everton defence.
