Southampton v Burnley tips – Saints to extend unbeaten run
The Saints should extend their unbeaten run by getting the better of Burnley on Sunday afternoon
October 12th, 2016
With just two points from their opening four games, Southampton made a very slow start to their Premier League campaign, however an upturn in fortunes followed their comprehensive Europa League victory over Sparta Prague and they went a subsequent five matches without defeat across all competitions, grabbing three wins along the way.
Southampton may have managed seven points from their last three top-flight games but manager Claude Puel is of the opinion that it should have been more.
“I think we have made a very good game,” he said to reporters following the 0-0 draw with Leicester City.
“It is very difficult to play against them with big pressure and their pressing. It was important for us to put the ball on the ground and to play.
“I think we had many chances and opportunities. Leicester also had them but I thought we could win this game at the end. We had many possibilities and it is a little disappointing to finish the game without a goal and without another result.”
Nevertheless the draw extended Southampton’s unbeaten run to six games and they will look to return to winning ways on Sunday. Burnley should given them an excellent chance to do just that.
The pundits confidently predicted that the Clarets would return immediately back to the Championship at the end of the season, however whilst they have hardly been setting the top flight alight so far they have managed to pick up seven points and manager Sean Dyche appears happy with his side’s performances to date.
“I think it’s a solid start,” he said. “A lot was made the last time in the Premier League of not winning the first game and we got that one out of the way early doors with a hard fought win against Liverpool. We were 20 seconds away from winning the second one against Hull and then it was a really good performance against Watford. It was probably the most rounded performance we’ve had this season.”
The Clarets may have started reasonably well but it should be noted that they have lost their three competitive matches away from Turf Moor this season, these defeats including a 1-0 loss to League Two side Accrington Stanley. Given that they also failed to find the net in any of these defeats, things don’t bode too well for the trip to St Mary’s at the weekend.
Southampton are clear 4/11 odds-on favourites to seal the three points this weekend and we agree with the bookies’ predictions. Clearly this isn’t the most attractive price so we’ll instead be heading to the ‘win-to-nil’ market where Southampton are up for grabs at a reasonable 11/10 with Paddy Power. The Saints haven’t conceded in their last six outings and they should hold firm against a Clarets side which struggle to score away from Turf Moor.
Charlie Austin’s miss against Leicester City could have cost his side all three points, however this aside he has been enjoying some excellent form this season with goals in all-but-one of his last five games for Southampton. This clash with Burnley will present him with an ideal opportunity to add to this tally and he is a tempting option on the anytime goalscorer market at 6/5 with Bet365.
