It is fair to say that the Reds have been very much a mixed bag this season so far, both in their European adventures and in their domestic competitions. Their opening three Europa League outings ended with 1-1 draws against Bordeaux, Sion and Rubin Kazan, hardly inspiring stuff. Nevertheless, they shook themselves off and made sure of their place in the last 32 of the Europa League with a 1-0 win in Kazan and a 2-1 defeat of Bordeaux at Anfield.

They can go on to secure top spot in Group B with a win against second-placed Sion this evening, although they will need to bounce back from their unexpected 2-0 defeat at Newcastle last weekend, a result which dented their title ambitions.

Since their 3-1 loss to Manchester United three months ago, Liverpool have been beaten just once in all competitions until the visit to St James’ Park, that defeat coming against Crystal Palace early last month. With Jurgen Klopp lifting his side to within sight of the top six in the Premier League, we’re assuming that the weekend defeat was nothing more than a temporary slip-up.

Will that prove to be the case? We will see tonight. Liverpool may have secured for themselves a place in the last 32, but they will be desperate to clinch pole position and with comprehensive victories over Manchester City and Chelsea in the Premier League as well as a 6-1 thrashing of Southampton in the Capital One Cup, the Reds will be brimming with confidence ahead of this clash.

Sion held Liverpool to a draw at Anfield earlier in this competition, however Jurgen Klopp is now the man in charge and he will be looking for a better result than this in Switzerland. Ok, so a draw would be no bad thing. Liverpool would still finish top of the group and would head into the knockout stages in high spirits, however the Reds have been extremely ¬†impressive of late – the weekend defeat aside – and we believe that they can win against Sion at 13/10 with Bet365. Nevertheless, with the bookies going 3/1 for a home win and 2/1 for the draw, not everyone is convinced about the visitors’ chances and as such, we’ll be recommending avoiding the outright betting market altogether.

There could be a strong case made for all three outcomes and as such, we’ll be concentrating on goals. Liverpool have managed a single clean-sheet in their group to date with just two in their previous eight games in all competitions. Sion have found the back of the net in four out of their five group games, therefore we feel that there is value in backing both teams to score at 21/20 with BetVictor.

Either way, we’re expecting a very entertaining game in Switzerland tonight. There should be goals flowing and we therefore should look at goalscorers. The goal-scoring return of Daniel Sturridge at Southampton somewhat overshadowed Divock Origi’s hat-trick in that encounter, however Sturridge is now out of action once again and we’ll be backing Origi to score anytime tonight at odds of 2/1 with Betfred.
