Sheffield United v Bristol City preview
Nigel Clough compliments Bristol City ahead of the Saturday lunchtime clash at Bramall Lane
August 8th, 2014
Sheffield United and Bristol City are the two favourites to land automatic promotion this season and Nigel Clough is looking forward to pitting his wits against Steve Cotterill this weekend.
The Blades had a barnstorming run last season after a terrible start under David Weir, with Clough having made several new signings as he bids to steer the club back into the Championship.
However, the former Derby boss knows that his team await a stern test in front of the Sky Sports cameras, especially with Sam Baldock plying his trade in attack for the Blades.
Speaking to the Sheffield Star, he said: “People forget that, until they came to our place (February 22), Bristol City arguably had a better record than us. They were down there with us and Steve came in and turned them around.
“They’ve made some brilliant signings and they will be as strong as anything in the league.”
He added: “There will be a fear of losing but, hopefully, that does not manifest itself in a stalemate, because we don’t do those very well.
“Mentally, I think we are stronger. The experience at the start of last season will stand those who were here in good stead.
“It will act as an incentive, because they will be thinking ‘we don’t want to be down there again after 12 or 13 games, because it is a horrible place to get out of.’
“That’s not a lack of ambition. You cannot win the league after 12 or 13 games, but arguably you can lose it.”
