Rangers v FC Progres Niederkorn Preview & Tips
It should be a routine enough win for Rangers when they make a return to European competition on Thursday evening
June 27th, 2017
Rangers wrapped up what was a less-than-impressive first season back in the Premiership just a few short weeks ago and they have a quick turnaround thanks to their involvement in the qualifying stages of the 2017/18 Europa League. They launch their European campaign with a two-legged encounter with Luxembourg minnows FC Progres Niederkorn, starting with the initial leg at Ibrox on Thursday evening and while this will their first involvement in Europe for six years, we expect the Light Blues to enjoy a dream start in their opening fixture.
Rangers’ close season has been remarkably short but they have managed to bring in some new players during the past few weeks as boss Pedro Caixinha seeks to improve the squad ahead of the upcoming campaign. Indeed the mood at Ibrox is pretty optimistic although this would undoubtedly change were the Gers to slip-up on Thursday.
Realistically we don’t really expect this to happen although Celtic showed last season that ‘minnow’ opposition should not be overlooked in the early stages of these competitions, the Hoops falling to a shock defeat to Gibraltar side Lincoln Red Imps in the Champions League qualifying rounds.
Rangers should prove too strong for the visitors this week however and while Caixinha has strengthened the side during the summer months, all eyes will still be on Kenny Miller to see whether or not he can pick up where he left off last season by finding the net against Progress Niederkorn in front of an expectant home support.
