Portugal v Mexico Preview & Tips
Will it be a winning start for Portugal in the Confederations Cup or will Mexico have other ideas?
June 14th, 2017
Portugal can usually be relied upon to fail dismally in international competitions but they came good during last summer’s European Championships in France as they swept aside all-comers to be crowned champions of Europe. It was by no means pretty to watch and the Portuguese managed just a single victory within 90 minutes, however it was enough to win the competition and they will now look to emulate this success in the upcoming FIFA Confederations Cup.
Portugal have been on top form since their exploits in France last summer and whilst their World Cup qualifying campaign failed to get off the starting blocks when they were beaten 2-0 in Switzerland, they succeeded in bouncing back in emphatic fashion to thrash Andorra to the tune of 6-0 and follow this up by winning their subsequent four qualifying matches with 16 goals scored and just one in reply.
Confidence is therefore pretty high in the Portuguese camp and it needs to be given that this weekend’s opposition is of a high calibre. Mexico are moving closer to the World Cup in Russia next year and they are certainly impressing on the international circuit with just one defeat in their previous thirteen outings. Whilst they won’t be a push-over on Sunday, Portugal will present them with extremely tough opposition and the gap in quality between the sides will soon become all too apparent.
Naturally we expect to see Cristiano Ronaldo feature heavily in this encounter. The Real Madrid marksman has proven goal-scoring credentials both at club and international level and following his brace against Juventus in the Champions League Final last month, we fully expect him to add to the scoreline by finding the net at some point this weekend.
