This is a competition which the Cumbrians thoroughly enjoy. Ok so it is four years since Carlisle have appeared in the final, however they are certainly specialists in this tournament, having been finalists on no less than six occasions and winners twice, the most recent being 2011 when they beat Brentford to the tune of 1-0 in front of a 40,000 crowd.

Indeed, last year’s final attracted a healthy 72,000 to Wembley and it is for this very reason that the smaller clubs take the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy extremely seriously. Carlisle are realistic in their FA Cup and League Cup ambitions, however this is a trophy which they can and indeed have got their hands on and as such, they will be heading to Vale Park tonight with a win very much in their minds.

The Cumbrians have had a mixed bag of results this season so far with just a single win from their opening five League Two fixtures, however an impressive 2-1 win at QPR in the Capital One Cup has rewarded them with a money-spinning third-round tie at Anfield next month and thoughts will be very much on that upcoming clash.

Nevertheless, their immediate thoughts will be on tonight’s match and they face a Port Vale side which has failed to impress in League One. Like Carlisle, their five league matches have returned a single win and they head into tonight’s match on the back of a 1-0 defeat at Bradford.

Port Vale have only appeared in the JPT finals twice, however the won on both occasions, beating Stockport County 2-1 in 1993 and Brentford by the same scoreline in 2001. Will this be their year again? Not if the Cumbrians can help it!
