The Northern Irish may not have managed to win any trophies during the summer although it was nevertheless a successful year for Michael O’Neill’s side in that they reached the group stage of the European Championships, ultimately going out to a strong Wales side.

They are continuing their qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup in similar fashion with a hard-fought point from their draw in the Czech Republic, manager O’Neill understandably delighted with that result.

“We’re pleased with a point,” he said. “It’s a better point for us than it is for them. The great thing is that we got off to a good start in a difficult away game.

“We have a home game against San Marino and a home game against Azerbaijan, we would hope that gives us a platform to take seven points and obviously we will try and take what we can in Germany. We said at the outset if we could take seven points or even more from our first four games we would be in a strong position.”

Tiny San Marino shouldn’t pose the Northern Irish too many problems and whilst the hosts shouldn’t get complacent ahead of this fixture, we’re not expecting them to be presented with too many challenges from a side priced 150/1 to seal the points this weekend.

At odds of 1/25, going for a Northern Ireland victory doesn’t offer any value whatsoever therefore we’ll be backing the hosts on the handicap market with BetVictor going a backable 20/23 on Northern nIreland -3. The visitors usually lose by at least three goals on the road and we don’t anticipate things being any different at Windsor Park on Saturday evening.

This clash with the group minnows will present Northern Ireland’s strikers with the perfect opportunity to get back amongst the goals with Jamie Ward in the midst of a 16-game goal drought for his national side. Kyle Lafferty is having similar problems with just one goal for Norwich City so far this season, however he showed his worth during the European Championships with seven goals and we’ll be backing him at 9/20 on the Anytime Goalscorer market.

Our tips:

Back Northern Ireland -3 on handicap market at 20/23 with BetVictor

Back Kyle Lafferty to score anytime at 9/20 with Winner
