Northern Ireland v Azerbaijan tips: Back Irish to ease past visitors
Back odds-on Northern Ireland to produce the goods tonight
November 11th, 2016
Northern Ireland have been enjoying some excellent results in recent months and despite stumbling somewhat in their World Cup 2018 qualifiers they will be confident of sealing the three points at Windsor Park this evening.
The last five outings for Micheal O’Neill’s men have seen the side lose to Wales, suffer two defeats to Germany and win 4-0 over minnows San Marino. The hosts will be confident of adding a second qualifying win when they face an Azerbaijani side which have won just two of their last seventeen outings.
Indeed whilst the visitors are of a much better quality than tiny San Marino – Azerbaijan drawing with Norway, Andorra and Uzbekistan in the past two years – we expect Michael O’Neill’s side to dominate from the kick-off.
The Azerbaijani squad consists mainly of Qarabag players and they aren’t renowned for their attacking quality with not one players managing more than five international goals and the entire side scoring just twice in 2016.
Northern Ireland may have suffered some unfortunate defeats themselves, however these defeats were against world champions Germany and a particularly strong Wales and don’t envisage the home side struggling against Azerbaijan this evening.
The Irish represent solid if unspectacular value at 4/7 to win, however we’ll be backing O’Neill’s men to win-to-nil at 6/5 with Paddy Power. It could end in a goal-fest, however despite Azerbaijan losing 6-0 to Croatia in 2014 and 4-1 to Serbia the following year, we don’t expect anything approaching this result and 1-0 looks great value to us at 4/1 with William Hill.
