Next Sunderland Manager – Kevin Phillips favourite at 5/1
David Moyes has left the Stadium of Light but who will fill his shoes?
May 23rd, 2017
It seems that David Moyes wasn’t the right man for the job after all. With his side now relegated into the Championship, former Sunderland boss David Moyes decided that enough was enough and walked away from his position as manager yesterday. Hardly a surprise really given that there was every possibility that he would have been given the heave-ho anyway following an absolute disaster of a season.
He was likely on a ‘hiding to nothing’ at the Stadium of Light. Had he been hoping to splash the cash in the January Transfer window then he would certainly have been dreadfully disappointed and whilst this wasn’t the only reason for the side’s lengthy slide into the Championship, it certainly added to the problems.
Attention must now turn to a successor and Kevin Phillips is an early frontrunner in this regard. The former Sunderland striker was a Black Cats hero having banged in no less than thirty goals in 1999-2000. He has limited managerial experience, although he would doubtless prove a popular appointment with the fans. Does he have what it takes to steer the Black Cats back into the top-flight? We could find out soon.
Another candidate is Roy Keene and at odds of 6/1 with Paddy Power there is clearly a massive amount of cash being aimed in his general direction. Keene managed Sunderland at the start of his management career and he would prove another popular appointment. Next up is Nigel Pearson at 7/1 with Aitor Karanka 10/1 and Derek Mcinnes 14/1.
