Next Southampton Manager – Mauricio Pellegrino a shoe-in at 1/5
Will we be seeing Mauricio Pellegrino in the Southampton dug-out next season? It's looking increasingly likely
June 23rd, 2017
It is starting to look like we’ll be seeing Mauricio Pochettino take the hot-seat at St Mary’s following reports that his main rival for the position – Frank de Boer – has been offered the managerial position at Crystal Palace. Pellegrini and De Boer were neck-and-neck with the bookmakers for both the Southampton and Crystal Palace jobs only a few days ago, however it appears that De Boer has decided to take the plunge at Selhurst Park ahead of the new season.
Unsurprisingly the bookmakers have decided to call it a day on the ‘Next Crystal Palace Manager’ betting market with the book now closed and as such, Mauricio Pellegrino’s odds on becoming Saints boss have naturally plummeted with many firms going just 1/5 that he ends up at St Mary’s in time for the start of 2017/18.
The Argentinian does have experience of the Premier League having been on the books of Liverpool both as player and as coach and he would return to these shores on the back of a decent record in the Spanish top-flight having steered Alaves into the top-half of the table and into the Copa del Rey final last season.
The bookmakers haven’t ruled out the unlikely possibility that Dutchman De Boer might decide to snub Crystal Palace’s offer and head instead to Southampton with William Hill going 16/1 that the former Ajax boss is next in the Saints’ hot-seat. Patrick Vieira’s odds have fallen to 14/1 amid a rash of bets on the Frenchman leaving New York City FC for St Mary’s while Reading boss Jaap Stam is another outsider at 16/1.
