Gillingham’s 2016/17 season to date doesn’t make particularly impressive reading and with the Gills sitting in a lowly seventeenth position in the League One table it was becoming clear that action needed to be taken. Many believed that a new manager would be the way forward and with the club adopting this course of action it was ‘goodbye Justin Edinburgh’.
Who will take over from Edinburgh is far from certain at this early stage, however the new manager’s remit will be crystal clear – steer the side up the League One table and towards the play-offs. This was the club’s aim at the start of the season, however with ten points separating the Gills from the top-six we’re not optimistic of their chances, particularly since the recent defeats to Millwall and Oxford United have left the Medway outfit closer to the bottom four in the table.
Former Gills player Adrian Pennock would certainly prove to be a favourite amongst supporters should he be appointed as manager and it is just as well given that he would appear to be ‘nailed-on’ for the position at odds of just 1/4 with Sky Bet. Pennock made no less than 168 appearances for Gillingham during a seven-year period with the club although his managerial experience is limited to non-league football.
Another frontrunner in the betting market is Ian Hendon, the former Leyton Orient manager having recently been sacked at Brisbane Road following a dismal run of results, however at odds of 6/1 he appears to be very much an outsider as things stand.
An interesting ‘contender’ is Dennis Wise, the former England and Chelsea midfielder a realistic possibility with his odds being cut from 10/1 to just 6/1 following a recent flurry of interest. Wise was player-manager with Millwall and has managerial experience at Swindon Town and Leeds United. Having spent a few years as Executive Director (Football) with Newcastle United he may well relish another stint at management – albeit at a lower level.
