Newcastle United v Sunderland tips – tight encounter expected at St James’ Park
The Magpies can be shackled by their arch-rivals Sunderland on Sunday
December 19th, 2014
Newcastle United are sitting comfortably in eighth place after a solid start to the season, with the supporters now anticipating a derby victory against a team seven points worse off this season.
Alan Pardew was a public hate figure a few months ago, although the manager has improved the team’s fortunes, with the Magpies unbeaten at St James’ Park since losing to Manchester City in their first match of the campaign.
However, the last two matches have seen United lose by an aggregate scoreline of 8-1 against Arsenal and Tottenham, with Pardew keen to keep things tight against a Sunderland side who have won this fixture 3-0 in the past two seasons.
Yet another defeat is unthinkable, while the visitors will arrive on a mission to keep things tight and make sure that they collect at least a point from what is always a feisty encounter.
While Newcastle will be well-backed, this is a match which could stay low on the goals count and bet365 go 5/2 about the game ending all square, with No Goalscorer available at 9/1 with the same firm.
Three of Sunderland’s last five encounters have ended in a 0-0 scoreline, with Gus Poyet this week bemoaning the players that have been foisted upon him at the Stadium of Light which is hardly great for team morale.
Newcastle are anxiously waiting to see if they can draft in an emergency keeper considering their first three choices are injured and their focus might be on protecting the defence rather than rove forward too ambitiously.
