Steve McClaren hasn’t enjoyed the best of starts to his reign at St James’ Park with the Magpies managing a solitary Premier League win in their opening ten games this term. In addition to this, the side have suffered six defeats and three draws, their most recent loss coming at the hands of arch-rivals Sunderland last weekend at the Stadium of Light.

Prior to this match there was a growing sense of optimism that the Magpies could be turning the corner after they thumped Norwich City 6-2, however this was quickly followed by more doom and gloom after the 3-0 defeat on Wearside and McClaren’s side are more desperate than ever to grab themselves a second all-important Premier League win.

Things have been better for Mark Hughes’ Stoke City side, the Potters grinding out some decent enough results and going four matches unbeaten in the top flight with wins over Aston Villa, Swansea City and Bournemouth as well as a draw with high-flying Leicester City, however all of this came to an abrupt halt in Hughes’ 100th match in charge at the Britannia when newly-promoted side Watford went home with a 2-0 win under their belt.

They had a chance to bounce back from this disappointment when Chelsea came to town in the midweek Capital One Cup clash and they did just that by overcoming the reigning Premier League champions on penalties to move in to the fifth round of the competition.

Along with this welcome midweek boost, the Potters go into this match on the back of some impressive league form away from home, the side suffering defeat in just one of their last five away games, that loss coming against current joint leaders Arsenal with goals from Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott.

Then home side have certainly been struggling for goals this season but following last weekend’s derby-match disappointment Steve McClaren will be determined to steer his side to a win at home. The Magpies were impressive in last week’s match until reduced to ten men and had that not happened we could obviously have witnessed a very different outcome. Stoke can boast some decent away form and they should get themselves onto the scoresheet, however Newcastle are certainly due some luck and we expect them to seal their second league of the season on Saturday afternoon.
