Netherlands v Iceland Tips – Blind era begins at Amsterdam Arena
The Netherlands will have a tough task at the Amsterdam Arena on Thursday
September 1st, 2015
The Netherlands welcome Iceland to Amsterdam in their Euro 2016 qualification clash on Thursday evening, the hosts hopeful that they can turn around what has been a very disappointing campaign so far.
Blind took charge of the Dutch national team on 1st August following the departure of Guus Hiddink under whom he was assistant. Nevertheless, the former Netherlands centre-back will need to turnaround the fortunes of a side which has managed a mere ten points from their six qualification games.
Indeed, the Netherlands took just three points in their opening three games although their form subsequently improved, however despite winning 2-0 against Latvia they are still in danger of missing out on automatic qualification and at best may need to just content themselves with progression into the finals as best third placed side or through the play-offs.
As such, Blind has been stamping his authority on the team and has appointed Arjen Robben as skipper, ahead of more likely candidate Robin Van Persie although whether they can turn things around against an Iceland team which sit firmly atop the Group A table remains to be seen.
Iceland have been the surprise package in this group and deservedly sit in pole position with some fourteen goals scored and just three conceded in their opening six outings. They enjoy a two-point cushion over the Czech Republic and sit five points ahead of the Netherlands, beating Hiddink’s side 2-0 in their last meeting in October.
We’re not for a second suggesting that they can do the double and beat the Dutch in their own back yard, but they can at least go home with something for their troubles.
